Step-Down Basket, 58 to 32 mm

A basket that changes the shape of the shot. It fits a 58 mm portafilter but narrows the coffee bed to 32 mm, so the same dose stands three times deeper. A deep puck resists flow, which means you grind coarser than usual and the water spends longer in contact with the coffee.

The result tends toward sweeter, rounder shots with less of the sharp edge fine grinds bring, and the tapered chamber can be run without tamping if the grind is set right. It is a different way to make espresso, not a drop-in upgrade: expect a few shots of re-dialing. If you use a puck screen, use a 38 mm one.
