One tool for the two steps after stirring. Set it on the basket and spin: the cross-pattern base levels the grounds, and the adaptive depth mechanism adds compression as it turns, so you get a flat, firm puck without a separate tamp.

Depth adjusts on an engraved scale from 4 to 14 mm, so the setting matches your dose and repeats. Grooved sides keep it from slipping in a wet hand. It does a good job of both steps; a dedicated calibrated tamper still does the compression step slightly better, if you want to keep both.
